Description of activity
Tanja Riekkinen is a PhD student in History at the University of Oulu. In her doctoral dissertation, Riekkinen specializes in the history of oil and energy transitions.
Riekkinen holds a bachelor’s (2015) and a master’s degree (2016) in history. Both her BA and MA theses were awarded a prize for best thesis of the academic year in Finnish and Scandinavian history at the University of Oulu.
Riekkinen has studied in Finland and abroad as a visiting PhD student at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, as well as in conjunction with international conferences and summer schools in countries including France, Norway, Great Britain, and Estonia. Her undergraduate minor subjects were Japanese studies, geography and environmental humanities.
Riekkinen has contributed to the state-of-the-art research by examining a newspaper discussion on a road construction project (Riekkinen 2013), and by shedding light on the 50-year history of the University of Oulu Academics (Riekkinen 2016; Riekkinen 2017). She has also focused on the long-term history of the use of fossil fuels in Finland (Riekkinen & Ruuskanen 2021) and have also sought to open a discussion concerning the role of advertising in the formation of sociotechnical imaginaries (STI) (Riekkinen 2022).
As a teacher at the University of Oulu, she has sought to support the career development of colleagues by inviting ECRs to give guest lectures during her courses. She has also served in several positions of trust and been involved in organizing activities for early career researchers during the European Society for Environmental History Conferences and more recently during the World Congress of Environmental History. To increase the impact of her research, she has published blog posts (Riekkinen 2023; Höysniemi et al. 2021; Riekkinen 2019).
